The New Lifeboat Station: Benefits & Features
The new station at Bembridge will be a high quality building in keeping with the locality. The design of the building will ensure the efficient launch and recovery of the lifeboats while minimising the impact on the environment. We are working closely with the planning authority and other interested parties to ensure that local concerns are respected.
The benefits include:
A Larger boat hall
- To house the present generation of lifeboats
A Crew training room
- To provide space for the crew to receive training
- To improve facilities for the handling of casualties
- To enable the public to attend lectures and demonstrations
An Office for the Lifeboat Operations Manager
- To aid efficiency and to enable rapid IT radio contact to be maintained between lifeboat, coastguard and, when necessary, the RNLI office
Improvements in Conditions for the Crew
- To provide room for the crew to change and drying facilities to ensure that their clothing is dry when they go to sea
- To increase the number of lavatories to include facilities for mixed crews and visitors
- To locate the boarding platform immediately outside the changing room to enable the crew to scramble into their kit and board without hindrance
Amenities for visitors
- To instruct the public about the appeal for the new Bembridge Lifeboat Station by providing a viewing gallery accessible by lift
- To illustrate the necessity of updating a nineteenth-century station to fit the requirements of the twenty-first.
